If you’re in San Francisco, I am very jealous of you. “Water to Paper, Paint to Sky: The Art of Tyrus Wong” just opened at The Walt Disney Family Musuem.  I have been stumbling into Wong’s work online for a while now and seeing the originals would be a real treat. It can difficult for an artist to be comfortable with so much open space and yet the confidence and simplification in Wong’s drawing seems to quietly revel in the power and serenity of nature.

From the exhibition catalog:

This retrospective features more than 150 works including paintings, sculptures, works on paper, painted scarves, kites, and more. Although he never met Walt Disney, it was the ethereal beauty of Wong’s Eastern influenced paintings that caught Walt’s eye and became the inspiration for the animated feature Bambi, which changed the way animation art was presented, and continues to be an inspiration to contemporary artists.

Tyrus Wong is 102 years old and continues his artwork to this day. The exhibit runs through February 3, 2014. If anyone gets a chance to see it, please let us know what you thought!
